Bayern Munich fire Nagelsmann, appoint Thomas Tuchel as manager

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have announced in a shock move that they have parted ways with manager Julian Nagelsmann, with former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel appointed in his place. The German side sacked their young manager with the club in second place in Bundesliga.

Nagelsmann joined Bayern Munich in 2021 after Hansi Flick resigned his position at the club. The champions paid a world-record €25 million to RB Leipzig to secure his services, and he committed to a five-year deal. He won the league in his debut season but was knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Villarreal in the quarterfinals.

This season, Nagelsmann has led Bayern Munich in 37 games, losing only three of them. His side is the only one with a 100% record in the UEFA Champions League, where they have been drawn against Manchester City in the last eight. The past few weeks have been tumultuous for the 35-year-old as he has had to cope with his tactics leaking out to the press, presumably by a dressing room mole.

Nagelsmann will be replaced by former Chelsea and PSG boss Thomas Tuchel, who has agreed a 2.5 year deal with the club. The German manager, who previously handled Borussia Dortmund, has been out of a job since August when the new Chelsea ownership relieved him of his duties following a defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.

The 49-year-old Tuchel left Germany in 2017 after his spell in charge of Borussia Dortmund. He joined PSG afterwards before leading Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021. The first duty he has as Bayern Munich manager will be to overtake his former side Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga standings and navigate his way to another UEFA Champions League title.
