Everyone’s favorite sci-fi series is finally coming back to Netflix.
Black Mirror is returning with a brand new season, promising “six electrifying stories” that will further blur the lines between tech and humanity.
The chilling Black Mirror Season 7 trailer – which can be viewed above – kicks off with a glimpse at what appears to be a cutting edge new technology, introduced to us by a willowy Peter Capaldi. “They call it mind expanding,” he explains in the trailer as Rashida Jones and Chris O’Dowd appear to give it a shot together. “It alters your neural structure. The mind is a computer. Suddenly, you’re not just more receptive, you’ve become a receiver.”
It may sound promising in theory. But in the world of Black Mirror, it never is.
The season appears to focus on a high-tech game that immerses players into an AI-powered world. Awkwafina acts as the game director, who forebodingly warns a hesitant Issa Rae as she plugs into the game, “Just remember that they’re AIs, to them this is real.”
But it looks like Black Mirror is confirming everyone’s fears about the future of artificial intelligence this season. As Capaldi coldly puts it in the trailer, “Humans consider artificial life to be somehow less than them.” At another point, Jay Simpson presciently quips, “We’ll all be cyborgs before long.”
Could this be the robot uprising humanity’s long feared?
As always, the new season will feature a top-notch cast, with newcomers such as Emma Corrin, Paul Giamatti, Tracee Ellis Ross, and many more. Will Poulter will also be reprising his role from Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
But all eyes will be on Cristin Miliotti this season as the show revives one of its top-rated episodes, “USS Callister,” featuring the award-winning breakout star of The Penguin.
Miliotti will be reprising her role as Nanette Cole, who empowered her coworkers in the first episode to rise up against Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), who used his programming skills to create a sci-fi simulation game where he took his feelings of disillusionment out on his co-workers.
So, when does the new Black Mirror S7 come out?
The new season of Black Mirror premieres on Netflix Thursday, April 10.
All six episodes of the new season will drop altogether, so clear your weekend plans. Black Mirror Season 7 will be the perfect binge watch.
