  • Poppi is changing the formula of its root beer flavor
  • The prebiotic soda brand said it heard customers’ complaints about the old version “loud and clear”
  • The brand also shared a funny Instagram carousel showing social media posts that criticized the original product

Poppi is shaking things up with its root beer flavor.

The prebiotic soda brand made the announcement in an Instagram post on Tuesday, June 3, explaining that criticism from customers prompted the move.

“We heard you loud and clear 🗣️🗣️🗣️ you wanted us to level up our Root Beer, so that’s exactly what we did 😏😋,” the message began.

“Allow us to reintroduce you to our brand ✨ new and improved ✨ Root Beer!” the caption continued. “We gave it a fresh new look and a bold new flavor and we can’t WAIT to hear what you think! 😍”

The accompanying image showed an updated can of the soda in a new hue — maroon — next to a root beer float splashing out of a tall clear glass.

The post concluded by asking fans, “If you’ve tried it yet, did we totally nail it or what??”

PEOPLE tried the new product and noted that it did taste more like classic root beer than the old version.

Some commenters on the post shared early praise for the new recipe, with one writing, “Props to yall for taking feedback and nailing the new iteration 👏 So many brand can learn from you!”

However, other comments expressed enthusiasm for the original root beer, such as one that read, “I hope it’s not too different.”

In an earlier Instagram post this week, Poppi shared some of the social media criticism of the old soda that inspired the change.

“omg photocopies of these pages were found allllll over poppi HQ this morning… 😔😔😔 we need ALL POPPI TEAMMATES TO THE GYMNASIUM IMMEDIATELY!” read the caption on the carousel.

The first slide shows one of the original golden-brown root beer cans with the words “flavor fails.”

The next one includes an image of a comment from 2024 that reads, “The Orange and Grape Poppi changed my life … the root beer one made me question everything.”

Another customer complaint says, “Why does the poppi root beer can look like a Madagascar hissing cockroach?”

“Poppi root beer tastes like A1 sauce and coins, disgusting,” reads a third insult.

The final slide contains a video of a hand scribbling another critique on a white page in orange Sharpie: “This flavor is the nastiest soda I’ve ever sipped. Do not taste her,” the note reads, before calling the soda “a fraud.”

Fans clearly got a kick out of the creative takedowns.

“Y’all are so real for this one,” wrote one commenter, while another noted, “We love a roast.”
