As President Trump once memorably put it, “Everything woke turns to s—t.”
That even includes attempts to remake a movie classic like “Snow White.”
This week saw one of the strangest movie promotional events ever. Skipping all the major cities, Disney decided to throw a premiere event for 100 people at a remote castle in Segovia, Spain.
The main aim of Disney seems to have been to get the star of their movie — 23-year old Rachel Zegler — as far away from the public as possible.
It is a novel tactic. But one which is understandable.
For the brattish Zegler has a talent for irritating audiences wherever she goes.
The problem started three years ago, from the moment Zegler was cast in the role. In 2022 America was still going through the post-BLM “racial reckoning.”
Disney didn’t want to be “left behind” and so in its endless cynicism the studio announced that it was casting the first ever Latina Snow White.
So shocking. So daring. You could almost hear that ultimate glass ceiling shattering: the right of anyone to play Snow White in a $209 million Hollywood remake.
Unfortunately the star in question then proceeded to reveal how much she loathed the Disney original.
In an interview, Zegler announced that the much-loved animated classic was “extremely dated.” As a film made in 1937 might well be. But it was the presumption of what she said next that set alarm bells ringing.
“[Snow White’s] not going to be saved by the prince” Zegler told the cameras. “She’s not going to be dreaming about true love. She’s dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”
Perhaps Zegler thought that this sounded fresh and daring. But to most ears it sounded like Disney was about to make a movie with the same themes as every other movie the studios have tried to force-feed us in recent years.
Because “strong woman” is one of the boxes that almost every Hollywood film in recent years has checked. It does not even do to simply show a woman as the equal of a man.
No — a truly preachy flop-eroo (like Amazon’s “Rings of Power”) must have strong women able to effortlessly overwhelm hordes of helpless armor-clad males.
It doesn’t make any sense. But it’s not meant to. It’s simply meant to be good for us. Like eating our greens.
There was a certain backlash against Zegler’s comments and it seems that Disney executives tried to get their star-in-waiting to step away from the microphones a bit. They did not take into account the Gen Z’s social media activities.
And it turned out that last November’s election turned Snow White into a spluttering, red rage.
After Donald Trump was announced as the President elect, Zegler used Instagram to announce that she was “speechless.” Which, unfortunately for Disney’s executives, she was not.
She also announced herself “heartbroken.” And she then went on to say that she hoped that “Trump supporters and Trump voters and Trump himself may never know peace.”
That’s quite the move — to decide to attack the majority of the voting public. The sort that might have once paid to go to the cinema and see your crappy re-tread.
Disney executives obviously made a call and Zegler was soon apologizing. Though she did so by saying that she believes “everyone has a right to their opinion even when it differs from my own.”
Which is hugely gracious of her. I’m sure many of us were previously under the impression that nobody has the right to an opinion if it differed from that of a brain-dead, faltering starlet.
By this point Disney executives were reportedly panicking about the disaster Zegler was bringing upon them. The studio has already had flop after flop in recent years.
Mainly because everything they touch turns woke. Which means it turns into box office poison.
The studio’s remake of “Peter Pan” a couple of years back — titled “Peter Pan & Wendy” — did the same thing that Snow White seems to be doing.
Instead of paying tribute to the original or adding some modern sparkle, Disney seemed intent instead on prodding the audience.
Suddenly the “strong woman” theme had to be everywhere. As did “color-blind” (more rightly known as “color-obsessed”) casting.
The film flopped, as it deserved to.
And it looks like woke Snow White will go the same way. Which is why Disney’s executives are trying to get their “star” as far away as possible. To a remote castle in Spain.
It’s probably for the best that she’s there. But I bet the studio execs are kicking themselves that they haven’t given her a poisoned apple to take with her.
Protesters prove again they are moral vacuums
Speaking of brats, I was interested in the statement read out yesterday on behalf of Mahmoud Khalil’s wife.
The NY woman who is married to the soon-to-be-deported Hamas supporter gave her views through her lawyers.
She claimed that “My husband was kidnapped from our home, and it’s shameful that the United States government continues to hold him. I demand his immediate release and return to our family. His disappearance has devastated our lives. Every day without him is filled with uncertainty, not just for me, but for our entire family and community. Our loved ones are struggling with the pain and fear of his sudden absence.”
Which is interesting. Because of course Khalil and his friends are very much on the side of kidnapping. Seventeen months ago their great heroes in Hamas kidnapped 250 Israelis from their homes.
Among the Americans taken hostage were many Americans, including 21-year-old Edan Alexander, from New Jersey. And I don’t see Khalil and Co. having any concern for his family’s pain.
To date there have been no huge protests in New York demanding Edan Alexander’s release.
Thugs and blowhards like Zohran Mamdani haven’t screamed themselves hoarse to demand that Alexander is released from actual captivity.
As ever these people give themselves away. They support hostage-taking when it involves actual torture and deprivation.
But when it comes to US law enforcement doing its job? Oh then you cry victim. Sorry — not falling for it.
