KJ Smith is about to enter her third trimester — and just revealed she’s expecting a baby girl.

The Sistas actress debuted her baby belly on the red carpet at the 2025 BET Awards on Monday, June 9 outside the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Smith, 40, is expecting her first baby with her husband Skyh Black.

Smith was glowing in a flowing green gown with cutouts and her hair pulled back into an elegant low bun. Black, 37, opted for an all-black ensemble with sunglasses and necklaces to complete the look. The parents-to-be posed on the red carpet for some PDA moments and hand-holding.

Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Smith said she had experienced morning sickness and “all the cravings” — but said lasagna and French fries, specifically, did not sit well with “her.”

Clapping a hand over her mouth as Smith realized she’d let the sex of baby slip, her husband laughed and said, “She’s been telling me the whole time [to keep the secret]!” as Smith apologized to him. “No, you gotta leave that in though, you did it!” Black jokingly responded.

Smith admitted she’d previously told Black, “If you tell I’m going to… Every time someone asks him, I give him the death stare.” He admitted, “This whole BET Experience I’m in my head like don’t say this, make sure you don’t say that!” only for Smith to be the one who revealed the news.

“I have mom brain!” she said, defending herself.

“To know that I’m going to be a girl dad … I’ve bought so many things from 0-6 months that she’s telling me to stop. I’m elated!” Smith added, “Every day is a new ‘girl dad’ t-shirt for him and her… he’s like, ‘Look what I got!'”

Do the couple have a name for their daughter all picked out? “Yes we do — and that I will keep secret!” Smith told PEOPLE.

Black and the All The Queen’s Men star began dating in January 2021 and were engaged that December.

Black and Smith got married in September 2023 at the Malibu Dream Resort in front of their 150 closest family members and friends.

They spoke with PEOPLE about their special day and the thoughtful theme they had in mind. “Our last name is Black, so we always use it as a play on words,” Black said of the event, which included elements of their shared Black culture.

“We’re from the South and we have these traditions that are very near and dear to our hearts that our parents and grandparents have shared. Our wedding is an homage to our ancestors with some elegant moments we’ve curated and loved as a couple… And it was better than I imagined.”

Smith debuted her baby bump in May, announcing her pregnancy with ESSENCE. She was hesitant to have kids since she was focused on her acting career, had fibroids, and suffered from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, Black changed her mind.

“I didn’t want kids at all. I aspired to be a rich auntie. I did not meet my husband until well into my 30s, so I had already decided,” Smith told ESSENCE exclusively.

“And then when he came into my life, and you meet a man who is responsible and a leader who takes charge and wants to be a father, wants to have a family, my mind changed as we grew and as we became a couple and married.”

She continued, “He was the main reason I wanted a child. I said, ‘This would be a good experience with you as my partner and husband.’ So I didn’t anticipate having kids at all, and now I want as many as I can have.”

Black is also looking forward to parenthood. “My biological father was very absent in my life. So personally, it’s something that I’ve always looked forward to. It’s something that I’ve always dreamed of, how I was going to connect with my kid, or foster their dreams, so I’m elated,” he told the publication.

The BET Awards are airing live on Monday, June 9 from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater on BET.
