Adam Brody on What Still ‘Surprises’ Him About Wife Leighton Meester (Exclusive)

After more than a decade of marriage, Adam Brody says wife Leighton Meester still “surprises” him.

Brody, 45, opened up exclusively to PEOPLE at the inaugural Newport Beach TV Fest on Friday, June 6, about working with Meester, 39, throughout the years and most recently on his breakout Netflix hit Nobody Wants This.

“I’m always impressed, and I’m always so proud,” the O.C. alum says of seeing Meester in her element while filming season 2. “It’s fun to bring her in and show off her talents.”

“She does it all,” he adds, heaping praise on the Gossip Girl alum. “I think she surprises me with how funny she is, and then, at the same time, can go as deep as anyone.”

Brody was honored at the Newport Beach TV Fest with the TV Performance of the Years Award (Actor) for his role as Noah, the “hot rabbi” who finds himself in an unexpected romance with podcaster Joanne (Kristen Bell) in Nobody Wants This.

The actor has already won a Critics Choice Award and received SAG and Golden Globe nominations for playing Noah. Both he and the Netflix show have a lot of buzz heading into Emmys season.

In February, Meester was announced as a new addition for the show’s highly anticipated second season. She will guest star as Abby, described by Netflix as an “Instagram mommy influencer” who is the middle school nemesis for Bell’s Joanne.

Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster previously told PEOPLE that Meester is a “comedic genius.”

“She’s so funny. She blew our minds. We were like, ‘Do, like, we write more of her in?'” Foster said. 

“She’s done comedies, but she’s so funny in this,” Foster continued. “I don’t know, it was just a different energy that I’d never seen before and just killed it. She’s so good.”

Foster also teased that Brody and Meester have “got chemistry.”

The couple, who met on the set of the 2011 film The Oranges and married in February 2014, have two children: daughter Arlo Day, 9, and a 4-year-old son, whose name they have not publicly shared.

Brody and Meester have also worked together on films like Life Partners and River Wild and shows like Single Parents.

Production on Nobody Wants This season 2 commenced in March, with Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons, Jackie Tohn and more returning from the first season.
