Daniel Dae Kim Weighs in on Rumors of a ‘Lost’ Movie

Will Daniel Dae Kim be heading back to the world of Lost? Not so fast.

The actor, who played Jin-Soo Kwon on Lost, spoke to E! News on the Tony Awards red carpet on June 8 about rumors of a Lost film. Kim, 56, was nominated for best actor in a play for his starring role in Yellow Face at the ceremony.  

When asked about the possibility of a Lost sequel film, Kim told the outlet, “I think that’s above my pay grade.” The series, which ran from 2004 to 2010, celebrated the 15th anniversary of the finale this May. 

But even if Kim’s Jin won’t be hitting the beach on the island anytime soon, he’s glad that fans still feel so connected to the series.  “I’m excited that so many people keep talking about the show — even after all these years, people remember it, want to see it and then I get recognized for it,” he said. 

“Not many projects hang out in the culture for that long. I feel lucky,” the Hawaii Five-0 star added. 

But there is one part of fan reaction to Lost that he doesn’t miss: people giving him looks when he boarded a plane. “Those days are over,” he said. “There was a time when they gave me a second look.”

Back in May, Kim spoke to PEOPLE about the polarizing Lost finale. “I think I have some understanding of it,” he said. “I was able to talk to the showrunners, and I enjoyed it. I know it was controversial, but I enjoyed it because it provided closure for the characters, and that’s the thing I wanted most from that finale.”

Kim was the first Asian American performer to be nominated for Best Actor in a Play. “It feels incredibly special,” he told PEOPLE in May about the honor. “I found out that stat a couple of weeks ago, and it really surprised me because the Tonys have been around for 78 years! To know that I’m the first makes me a little sad, but a lot happy. It’s very meaningful. In fact, it means more for that reason than it does for my own achievement.”

Kim said that playing his role in Yellow Face was “really liberating” because he “got to play some comedy,” something he hasn’t done as much in film and television.

“I remember someone saying to me once, ‘There’s no room for you in show business. You have to make room.’ And I’ve kept that with me for times when I felt the opportunities weren’t where I wanted them to be,” he said. “I thought, ‘Well, so what can I do to make them happen?’ ”
