Glen Powell’s Ex Gigi Paris Reveals How They Broke Up

Gigi Paris followed her gut.

The model broke her silence on her highly-publicized breakup from Glen Powell in 2023 during her guest appearance on the Too Much podcast, and revealed exactly when she knew it was time to call it quits.

She recalled that right before their breakup, she was planning on flying to Australia for work, where Powell was overseas filming Anyone But You with his costar Sydney Sweeney. As romance rumors between the costars grew at the time, she said she received a phone call from Powell telling her not to visit him on set.

“It’s pretty insane. I got a phone call from him right when I was about to go to Australia to work. I had my visa that took me much longer than I anticipated,” she explained. “Meanwhile, all this s— was coming out on the internet, and I had jobs lined up. I was gonna go, ironically, to shoot Bridal.”

“He called and said, ‘The producers and I have discussed that I think it’s best that you don’t come to visit,” Paris — who never explicitly named Powell or Sweeney during the interview — told host Emma Klipstein in the episode released Tuesday, June 10.

“And that’s when I hung up, she added. “And I was like, this motherf—– is done to me.”

“I think that’s where I just also fell out of love,” the model added. “I was like, where the f— are your balls… to stand up for yourself?”

Still, Paris says she flew to Australia.

“I went anyways just to look him in the eye and break up with him,” she said. “But then I was stuck there for two weeks doing my jobs — and there was a rule, like, I was not allowed near set. I was not allowed anywhere near production. It was very bizarre.”

Paris revealed that she broke up with Powell as soon as she got to Australia. It was emotional, she shared.

“It was just our goodbye, so there was lots of tears,” she continued. “There were lots of things. Lots of conversations were had and we like tried to kind of keep it on good terms in some sort of way.”

PEOPLE confirmed the couple’s breakup in April 2023 which came amid fan speculation about a romantic relationship between Powell and Sweeney as they promoted their film together.

Months later, Sweeney addressed the romance rumors during a Variety interview. “It’s a rom-com. That’s what people want!” she told the outlet at the time. “Glen and I don’t really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he’s such a hard worker, and I’m a hard worker.”

Sweeney added, “They want it. It’s fun to give it to ’em.”

During an interview with Insider in December 2023, Powell opened up about the tension in his personal life, between his breakup with Paris and his promotional appearances with Sweeney ahead of their rom-com’s premiere.

“Well, look, the only reason it made things harder for me to lean into that stuff was that I was going through a very real breakup amidst a promotional tour,” Powell said of his and Sweeney’s decision to “lean in” to their onscreen chemistry.

“I was with someone that I really loved and cared about and was trying to kind of make sense of a lot of stuff,” the Twisters star shared. “It was a lot easier for Sydney to lean into something like that because she’s in a very committed and wonderful relationship and she’s very happy. So it was a little harder for me.” (At the time Sweeney was engaged to Jonathan Davino, though they called it off earlier this year.)

Elsewhere in the podcast episode, the model referenced the online rumors about the Anyone But You costars, still not naming names.

“It was just, this is what I have to do for my job. I had two options,” said Paris. “I could either pretend like I was going along with everything and have everyone wonder, like, ‘Are they hooking up? Are they not hooking up? Is she okay with this? What the f—?’ Or stand up for myself and say, ‘No, I’m actually not okay with this, and I’m walking away.’ So that’s what I decided to do … I was shattered.”

“I just wanted respect, especially if it’s gonna be public,” she continued. “Like, don’t make an ass out of me. Like, just don’t make a fool out of someone you’ve been with for over three years talking about forever with. Just have some decency, you know? And at the end of the day, it was like, well, work comes first. And if that’s the case, power to you, that’s your priority. I gotta walk away. What sucked was how it was handled. I felt like I was just fed to the dogs.”

Paris then went on to criticize Powell for not shutting down the romance rumors at the time.

“Where are you when you just need to stand up and say, ‘No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend. I wouldn’t do that.’ That’s all that needed to be said. And that wasn’t said … Never once,” she explained.

Representatives for Powell and Sweeney did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
