Deion Sanders Has Unknown Health Issue That’s Keeping Him Away from Coaching

Deion Sanders — who has long suffered from blood clot issues related to his legs and feet — is dealing with an unspecified health issue, his son reportedly said in a YouTube livestream over the weekend.

The Colorado football coach is resting at his home in Texas and has not been with his team in Boulder as they prepare for the start of the football season, Deion Sanders Jr. said in the livestream on Sunday, June 8, according to a report in USA Today.

“He’ll tell y’all soon enough what he going through, what he went through,” Deion Jr., 31, said on the livestream, and added that his father was “feeling well.”

The eldest son of the 57-year-old Hall of Fame football player handles social media efforts on behalf of his father, who is entering his third season at the helm in Colorado.

“When we get back in Boulder, I don’t know,” Deion Jr. said. “I’m waiting until my dad leaves. When he leaves, then I’ll go. Until then, I’m gonna sit here with him.”

On the same day, Sanders canceled a keynote appearance at a sickle cell disease symposium in Florida, “due to an unavoidable last-minute scheduling change,” the Foundation for Sickle Cell Disease Research said in a statement. Hall of Fame basketball player Magic Johnson was subbed in his place.

Sanders was last seen publicly in April at a NFL draft watch party for his son Shedeur, whose shocking slide became a main storyline.

Two days after Shedeur was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round, Sanders shared a cryptic post on X.

“A lie don’t care who tells it or repeats it,” Sanders wrote at the time. “Its goal is to be heard. The truth could be standing right in front of u consistently for years but u don’t see it because a lie is in your mind.”

Sanders concluded, “The Truth may not be as popular as a lie but the Truth wins in the end.”

In May, the coach shared that he was “hurt” by those who criticized Shedeur’s fall — and also gave a glimpse into his recent health issues. 

“I hope you’re feeling better,” former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel said to Sanders on his podcast.

Sanders responded that “what I’m dealing with right now is at a whole ‘nother level” and added that he had lost about 14 pounds. 

In 2023, the former Dallas Cowboys cornerback underwent surgery to treat blood clots in both of his legs. Two years prior, he had his left big toe and second toe amputated due to blood clots he developed after surgery.

At the time, Sanders said that he was experiencing pain and numbness in his foot.

“I don’t have feeling in the bottom of my foot at all,” he explained on Thee Pregame in 2023. “I just want to know what we could do because I want to do it this summer. When we get rolling, I’m not gonna have time to do it.”
