‘Smash’ Sets Broadway Closing Date After Tony-Nominated Run

Like the TV show before it, the Broadway curtain is coming down on Smash.

Producers Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron and Steven Spielberg announced Tuesday that the stage musical adaptation of the NBC series — about the making of a fictional Marilyn Monroe bio-musical called Bombshell — will play its final performance on Sunday, June 22 at the Imperial Theatre in New York City.

The Tony-nominated show opened earlier this year to strong reviews and enthusiastic fans. At the time of its closing, it will have played 32 previews and 84 regular performances.

Directed by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman (The Producers), Smash features the original songs Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Mary Poppins Returns, Some Like It Hot) wrote for the TV show, like “The 20th Century Fox Mambo,” “They Just Keep Moving the Line” and the Emmy-nominated “Let Me Be Your Star.” The duo also crafted one new song that closes out the musical.

Their score is incorporated into a hilarious new comedic tale from book writers Rick Elice (Jersey Boys, Peter and the Starcatcher) and Bob Martin (a Tony winner for writing The Drowsy Chaperone).

Leading the musical is Robyn Hurder as Ivy Lynn, the role Megan Hilty made famous on screen. Instead of fighting to get the role of Marilyn as Ivy did on the small screen, the stage musical follows Ivy as she fights to keep the role when she gets a little-too meta while playing the blonde bombshell and isolates the show’s entire creative team and cast, including understudy Karen Cartwright (Caroline Bowman, in a version of Katharine McPhee‘s character).

Surrounding Hurder and Bowman is a stellar group of Broadway greats — starting with Brooks Ashmanskas, who earned his third Tony Award nomination for playing Bombshell‘s director/choreographer ‘Nigel.’

Stage veterans Krysta Rodriguez (Spring Awakening, The Addams Family, Into the Woods) and John Behlmann (Shucked, Tootsie, Significant Other) play Bombshell‘s songwriting and book-writing team ‘Tracy’ and ‘Jerry,’ while two-time Tony nominee Kristine Nielsen mixes things up as acting coach ‘Susan.’

Rounding out the cast is Jacqueline B. Arnold as play producer ‘Anita;’ Nicholas Matos as her assistant, ‘Scott;’ Bella Coppola as assistant choreographer ‘Chloe;’ and Casey Garvin as Bombshell‘s Joe DiMaggio, ‘Charlie.’

The company includes Wendi Bergamini, Sarah Bowden, Jacob Burns, Deanna Cudjoe, Chelle Denton, Daniel Gaymon, Merritt David Janes, Ndaya Dream Hoskins, David Paul Kidder, Ian Liberto, Libby Lloyd, McGee Maddox, Connor McRory, Jessie Peltier, J Savage, Jake Trammel and Katie Webber.

Among those on Smash‘s creative team is Joshua Bergasse, won an Emmy award for choreographing the television series. He recreated many of the Bombshell numbers for the stage, and earned a 2025 Tony nomination for Best Choreography in the process.

Season 2 Smash star Jennifer Hudson also produced.
