Meet the Real-Life Loves of the ‘Modern Family’ Cast

Since its series finale in 2020, the kids of Modern Family have grown up — and, in some cases, have started modern families of their own.

The ABC mockumentary-style sitcom followed three separate but connected families: the Pritchetts, the Dunphys and the Tuckers. Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) just wanted an open channel of communication with their three kids; Claire’s father Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) and his wife Gloria (Sofía Vergara), who had a notable age gap, raised kids together; and Jay’s son Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his partner Cam Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) navigated having multicultural family after welcoming their daughter Lily (Aubrey Frances Anderson-Emmons) via adoption from Vietnam.

Now, the former child stars featured in the series have started serious relationships of their own. Ariel Winter, who played Alex Dunphy, shares six dogs with former Disney Channel actor Luke Benward, whom she has been dating since 2019.

Meanwhile, Sarah Hyland, who played her older sister Haley Dunphy, married Bachelorette alum Wells Adams in 2022 — and the ceremony was officiated by none other than her on-screen uncle, Ferguson.

Here’s everything to know about the real-life loves of the Modern Family cast.

Burrell is Modern Family’s Phil Dunphy, an ultra-optimistic dad of three who acts more like a big kid than an adult.

The actor has been married to his wife, professional chef Holly Burrell, since 2000. The couple met in the ‘90s while playing lovers in a production of Twelfth Night at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C.

A decade after tying the knot, the Burrells welcomed daughter Frances via adoption. Two years later, they expanded their family with their second daughter, Greta, also through adoption.

While speaking to PEOPLE in March 2025, the Modern Family alum shared the key to his and Holly’s 25-year marriage.

“This is probably connected to the really old axiom of ‘Don’t go to bed angry,’ but we force ourselves to talk about stuff,” Ty said. “Both of us make sure that if something’s wrong, by the end of the night, we have at least had some discussion about it.”

Julie Bowen

Bowen, who portrayed Burrell’s neurotic on-screen wife Claire Dunphy, is single.

After 13 years of marriage to ex-husband Scott Phillips, Bowen filed for divorce in February 2018. The actress and Phillips share three children: son Oliver and twins Gustav and John.

In October 2023, Bowen told PEOPLE the only men in her life are her sons. “I’m seeing three boys, and they’re terrible dates,” she joked. “They never pay, and they always just stiff me.”

Ed O’Neill and Catherine Rusoff

O’Neill, who played Modern Family‘s patriarch Jay Pritchett, has been married to actress Catherine Rusoff since 1986.

The couple share two daughters, Sophia and Claire, the former of whom appeared on a 2012 episode of the sitcom.

Though O’Neill got to act alongside his older daughter on Modern Family, he most recently made headlines for appearing in a video with his younger daughter, Claire. In March 2025, the actor starred in one of Claire’s TikToks, in which the two lip-synced the intro of 2Pac’s “Hit Em Up.”

Sofía Vergara

Vergara, who played O’Neill’s fiery on-screen wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in Modern Family, is currently single after finalizing her divorce from actor Joe Manganiello in April 2024.

Vergara’s Modern Family costar, Ferguson, introduced the former couple in 2014, and she and Manganiello were married for seven years before parting ways in 2023.

Vergara was briefly linked to orthopedic surgeon Justin Saliman, but she announced their split in January 2025.

During a May 2025 appearance on Today, Vergara said she first felt “panicked” about dating in her 50s after her divorce, but now, she’s feeling less pressure. More than anything, the actress said she wants “somebody fun.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita

Ferguson played tightly-wound lawyer Mitchell Pritchett — Claire’s brother and Jay’s son — in Modern Family. In real life, he’s married to producer Justin Mikita.

Ferguson and Mikita first met at the gym shortly after Modern Family‘s premiere, with Mikita approaching Ferguson to talk about his character on the show. The two later reconnected after Mikita’s relationship ended.

They married in July 2013 in New York, one of the few places where same-sex marriage was legal at the time. In February 2023, Ferguson and Mikita reminisced about their city wedding with PEOPLE, with Ferguson sharing that his “favorite memory” was the walk from the wedding ceremony to the afterparty.

“It was always our plan to have people parade over to the afterparty,” he said. “Our wedding planner, Bryan Rafanelli, had the great idea of handing out noisemakers to guests so we could keep the vibe alive on the walk over to the new venue.”

Ferguson and Mikita share two children: Sullivan “Sully” Louis and Beckett Mercer.

Eric Stonestreet and Lindsay Schweitzer

Stonestreet, who starred as Ferguson’s flamboyant on-screen husband Cam Tucker, proposed to his pediatric nurse fiancée, Lindsay Schweitzer, in August 2021.

The couple met at a charity event in June 2016, and after five years of dating, the Modern Family alum popped the question with the help of Schweitzer’s twin sons.

Stonestreet told Schweitzer that a company wanted them to do a social media post together, and once they started recording, Schweitzer’s sons told her the actor had a question for her. Though she initially thought the proposal might have been a prank, Schweitzer said yes when she realized Stonestreet was genuine.

After sharing the proposal video during a February 2022 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Stonestreet said, “You know I’ve won a lot in life … but I definitely win with Lindsay. She is an amazing person, and I am so thankful that we met.”

Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams

Hyland portrayed Bowen and Burrell’s eldest on-screen child, Haley Dunphy, in Modern Family.

The actress married Adams, a former Bachelorette contestant and current Bachelor in Paradise bartender, in August 2022. The pair met through social media in 2017 when Hyland publicly shared her support for Adams’ run on The Bachelorette.

They began dating soon after, and Adams proposed to Hyland two years later in July 2019. After postponing their wedding twice due to the pandemic, the pair walked down the aisle at Sunstone Winery near Santa Barbara, Calif., on Aug. 20, 2022.

Their wedding was officiated by none other than Ferguson, who stepped in for Burrell at the last minute after a family emergency.

“I was honored to do it,” Ferguson told Entertainment Tonight in 2022. “Very happy to understudy Ty Burrell.”

In April 2025, a fan named Bella stopped Hyland on a street in New York City to ask for wedding advice on behalf of her sister. During the interaction, which has since gone viral on TikTok, the actress said her best advice was to “be present.”

“The best piece of advice I got for my wedding was to steal yourself away with your partner, and just have a moment and look over all of your guests at the wedding, and just appreciate everybody there and each other,” she said.

Ariel Winter and Luke Benward

Winter, who played Hyland’s sister Alex Dunphy, has been dating Benward, an actor, since 2019. The two were friends for years before their relationship turned romantic, which “was never something I expected at all” but “has been the biggest blessing for me,” she told Entertainment Tonight in July 2021.

Winter and Benward are proud parents to six pups: Chloe, Cupid, Casper, Cleo, Cobain and Cash. In May 2025, the actress wished “the best, most handsome dog dad ever” a happy birthday in a rare Instagram post featuring Benward.

“Entering this new decade/chapter of your life loving you even more and so excited to see what it brings you,” Winter wrote.

Rico Rodriguez played Manny Delgado, Gloria’s old-soul son from a previous marriage on Modern Family.

The actor is currently single and focused on spending time with family, namely his sister, actress Raini Rodriguez. The famous siblings frequently attend events together, such as the February 2025 Cobra Kai series finale premiere, where he debuted a new bearded look.

Nolan Gould

Known for playing the youngest Dunphy, Luke, on Modern Family, Nolan Gould is not known to be romantically involved with anyone.

During an October 2024 conversation with Ferguson for his Dinner’s on Me podcast, Gould said it was hard to bond with his peers because he didn’t have the shared experience of a typical upbringing.

“What was high school like? What was dating like when you were young? I kind of brush past all that stuff,” he said.

“All these doors closed on kind of a traditional lifestyle, but opened up these really beautiful doors on a traditional, nonlinear lifestyle,” he continued. “I’m doing a lot of the things now, maybe that people kind of did when they were young.”

Let’s be honest—no matter how stressful the day gets, a good viral video can instantly lift your mood. Whether it’s a funny pet doing something silly, a heartwarming moment between strangers, or a wild dance challenge, viral videos are what keep the internet fun and alive.
